Try a little music.
See the learning.
A short adaptation of BQM’s curriculum for donors and grantmakers. No instrument, account, or previous music experience needed.
Find the pulse
The pulse is the steady beat. A rhythm can change while the pulse stays steady.
Start the pulse. Count 1–2–3–4 four times. Tap along, then clap on 2 and 4 while keeping the pulse.
Learning objective: distinguish a steady pulse from a changing rhythm.
Make a rhythm
Four steps fit inside each beat. This 16-step grid makes one bar of four beats.
Choose where the drum hits land. Play your pattern, change one hit, and listen again. Gold steps are active; a border shows the playhead.
Learning objective: locate four beats in a bar and explain how a change affects the rhythm.
Shape a musical idea
A motif is a short musical idea you can repeat or change.
Choose a note for each beat, then play your four-note motif. Save version A, change just the final note, and compare the two endings.
Version A has not been saved.
Learning objective: make a deliberate revision and explain a creative choice.
From a beat to a creative decision.
The full eight-week curriculum extends this approach through songwriting, beat planning, studio practice, recording, mixing, and a finished demo project.
For donors & grantmakers
This experience shows the sequence: a clear objective, guided practice, a check for understanding, creative revision, and a learner explanation. These activities demonstrate the curriculum; actual learner outcomes require separate evidence.
